The Architecture of Instinct

The Core Mechanics of Attraction and Repulsion Vectors

(By Alberto Bonizzato – Behavioral Coach)

Within the theater of the human psyche, two protagonist actors execute their scripts long before any form of logical reasoning can materialize: the primary drives of Attraction and Repulsion.

To decode human behavior with clinical precision, a strict line of demarcation must be maintained between these primordial forces and ordinary sentiments. Although they share the exact same etiological matrix of activation:

Sentiments: Represent affective states that are generally modular, highly flexible, and fully integrated within conscious neocortical awareness.

Drives (Pulsioni): Manifest as impulsive, totalizing, and non-rational forces. They are structurally hardwired into the transgenerational Familial Emotional Model.

These drives systematically bypass individual volition, operating as rigid perceptual filters that distort or entirely dictate the subject's construction of reality itself.

1. The Biomechanics of Emotional Hijacking

When we posit that primary drives bypass individual determination, we are describing a literal state of emotional hijacking. Long before the prefrontal cortex—the anatomical seat of logical computing, structural mediation, and executive choice—can process environmental data, the Limbic System has already issued its non-negotiable verdict.

In this millisecond of rational black-out, the individual does not "choose" to experience attraction or repulsion; they are entirely flooded by the vector. Individual determination—the steering wheel of conscious human volition—is temporarily disconnected from the motor apparatus of action.

We cease to operate as pilots, converting into passive passengers of an organism that has already mapped its behavioral trajectory based on an archaic, limbic survival calculation.

2. Reality Through the Prismatic Prism of Drives

The conceptualization of drives as distorting filters demonstrates that the human organism never perceives the objective world "as it is." Instead, it interfaces with an environmental landscape that is permanently colored by a pre-existing affective state:

Under the Attraction Vector: The filter operates as a high-power magnification lens targeting perceived benefits. Every micro-detail of the desired object is magnified, while critical flaws or environmental hazards are systematically minimized or removed from conscious tracking. The mind projectively "embellishes" objective data to justify the visceral impulse toward it.

Under the Repulsion Vector: The filter converts into a hyper-vigilant threat detection sensor. A benign, neutral gesture is instantly interpreted as overt aggression; a standard pause in communication is weaponized as a moral offense.

Crucially, this cognitive distortion is not a systemic malfunction; it is a highly specialized evolutionary feature. The filter operates to render environmental data entirely consistent with the active drive, rapidly eliminating any perceptual ambiguities that could slow down the organism's defensive reaction.

3. From Perceptual Distortion to the Determination of Reality

The final phase of this process marks its most radical mutation: primary drives do not merely distort what already exists; they actively determine objective reality for the subject. If the repulsion filter achieves a critical threshold of energetic intensity, the individual does not perceive a "warped version" of a person—they perceive a person who is objectively, intrinsically evil.

In this high-arousal state, the internal projection hardwires itself as external truth:

The Law of Projective Truth

Objective reality ceases to exist as an independent dataset to be analyzed. It becomes a direct output of our internal emotional equilibrium (or disequilibrium). If the limbic system registers fear, the world is dangerous; if it registers attraction, the object is precious.

This absolute collapse between internal somatic states and external variables obliterates the boundary between the Ego and the world. The individual becomes a structural prisoner of a reality that they have unconsciously manufactured, objectified, and validated as empirical truth.

Operational Example (The Phobic Short-Circuit): Consider the mechanics of a phobia (the absolute peak of the Repulsion Vector). For an individual suffering from arachnophobia, a microscopic spider is not projectively "distorted"—it is structurally determined by the limbic system as a lethal monster. Neocortical determination ("I know cognitively that this insect is harmless") is entirely useless against an archaic drive that has already rewritten the laws of reality in that single fraction of a second.

4. The Sequential Phases of the Driven Response

Every human being experiences the daily, oscillating tides of these two competing forces. However, we rarely focus our awareness on their eziological origin, remaining content to simply undergo their behavioral outputs. The process that transforms a raw environmental stimulus into a moral judgment or a physical action is a lightning-fast mechanism, executed in distinct, sequential phases:

1. Pre-Conditioned Structural Setup: No encounter with reality occurs in a psychological vacuum. The limbic system is never neutral; it is permanently pre-oriented and pre-conditioned by the transgenerational Emotional Model. The organism approaches the environment with an already biassed autonomic arousal profile.

2. The Exception of Acute Startle: The only structural disruption to this pre-conditioned loop occurs during an acute startle reflex (spavento acuto). An abrupt, high-intensity environmental threat can temporarily bypass the learned operational software, overriding the familiar matrix to engage hardwired, evolutionary survival pathways.

3. The Driven Vector Incanalization: Under ordinary mechanics, the environmental stimulus is instantly filtered and canalized into the pre-set dominant axis: Fear (mandating systemic closure and defense) or Evolutionary Curiosity (unlocking environmental exploration and contact).

4. The Retrieval of the Archive: Operating under the dominant axis, the mind executes a rapid scan of past integrated experiences. In the presence of an experiential lacuna, it accesses collectively shared socio-cultural stereotypes, using them as cognitive shortcuts to assign a name to the somatic state.

5. The Projective State: This marks the definitive perceptual illusion. The primary drive absorbs the data from the archive or the stereotype, projecting it outwardly onto the target object. The subject no longer feels an "internal fear"; they perceive an "external danger." The subjective somatic sensation is completely objectified and mistaken for external reality.

6. Moral Focalization and Execution: Only at this terminal stage does the individual consciously interpret the situation through a moral or rational framework, executing a decision under the firm illusion of total autonomy—completely oblivious to the fact that their action was entirely dictated by the preceding sequence.

Conclusion: Two Sides of the Same Energetic Coin

Socio-cultural conditioning routinely associates attraction with the "positive" and repulsion with the "negative." From the dynamic perspective of POMM, however, both vectors possess the exact same quantitative energetic value.

The only structural difference lies within the cognitive encoding: within the Repulsion Vector, the sentiment of Fear is absolutely dominant, paralyzing the system's flexibility.

The more intense the primary emotional activation, the more violent the visceral impulses experienced by the subject, leading directly to chronic anxiety loops or structural phobias. In these clinical presentations, the drive ceases to operate as an adaptive evolutionary compass; it reveals itself as the conscious symptom of a deep systemic distortion.

To master this process means to cease being the passive victims of our "gut reactions." It requires us to independently observe how our introjected Emotional Model paints the world, transforming a blind, animalistic impulse into a conscious gateway for authentic self-knowledge. Drives, in the final analysis, are not errors in our coding; they are archaic processing languages. Learning to decode them allows us to separate what belongs to objective reality from what is merely a projection of our internal equilibrium.
