Depression: When the Engine Seizes (By Alberto Bonizzato – Behavioral Coach)
What happens if we must drive to work but discover that morning that our automobile has four flat tires? Many things can transpire and various solutions may present themselves, but the event that most probably occurs is that we enter an emotional state of block and rage. A block because even if we desired to change the flat tires, we possess only a single spare; a block due to the extraordinary nature of the situation and the sense of helplessness stemming from the non-immediate solvency of the problem. Rage because our internalized moral parameters identify us as guilty since we will arrive late to work; rage because we must spend a financial sum to repair the tires and will lose half a day over a situation we did not want, and so forth. What happens, however, if the failure cannot be framed within something explicitly known, such as the tires of an automobile, but instead concerns the innermost perception of ourselves? In this scenario, there are no physical tires to change, there are no mechanics to call, and we will not simply arrive late to work. Instead, we find ourselves in an impasse wherein there is no concrete response, no direct explanation, and above all, the system is incapable of clearly focalizing the primordial source of the block and the rage. Much has been written on depression, yet it appears that minimal attention has been directed toward the concrete pathways and dynamics that generate it. As established, the primary emotions (Curiosity and Fear) govern all actions. This is a primary dynamism that is exceptionally critical in the development and maintenance of self-identity perception. When this identity instance arrives at a state of severe disorientation, the individual is structurally incapable of tracing the sequence of situations that produced it. When a person is reared under a cultural training founded upon negation, they become calibrated to identify their own inadequacy above and prior to any other perception of the self and their own objective skills. As long as the individual manages to safeguard an equilibrium between their internal perception of inadequacy and the valorizing projective representations offered by the culture, they live and operate with a contained emotional imbalance (all things considered, they get by). This allows them to assert themselves and produce the exact situation they are most trained to execute: to negate—to negate that they are inadequate. The absolute prerequisites for this equilibrium are thus the negation of one's own inadequacy, and the negation of the negation of that same inadequacy. Within the POMM framework, we must execute an effort of intellectual honesty and cease treating depression as a "mysterious internal demon" or a random chemical imbalance. If we observe the mechanics of the human system, depression reveals itself for what it truly is: the biological safety shutdown that triggers automatically when a chronic, massive cycle of repressed rage and forced performance comes to an end upon hitting a calculation of absolute helplessness. One does not become depressed because they are "weak," but because they have been "too strong" in the completely wrong way. Depression is the exact operational millisecond wherein the metabolic bank of the Limbic System declares bankruptcy because the fuel reserves are depleted and the behavioral investments have yielded zero return.
[CHRONIC TOXIC PERFORMANCE / INDIGNATION] (Repressed Rage / Invisible Search for Redress) │ ▼ [BLIND OPEROSITÀ] (Forced Hyper-Activity to Buy External Value) │ ▼ [CRITICAL MATRIX BANKRUPTCY] (Depleted Limbic Reserves / Feedback Fails) │ ▼ [BIOLOGICAL SAFETY SHUTDOWN] (Depression: Heaviness, Anhedonia, Defense) 1. The Secret Ingredient: The "Invisible" Rage To decode depression, we must mathematically understand what occurs prior to the collapse. Everything originates from a profound, structural sense of injustice. The subject's Emotional Model registers an existential wrong: they were not valued or validated as they required, they were systematically devalued, or they feel trapped within a systemic role that does not belong to them. This perception manufactures an immense quantity of internal rage. However, at this precise juncture, an inhibitory block intervenes: if the subject's identity relies entirely upon extracting approval from the entourage to feel existentially alive, they cannot explode. They cannot send everyone to hell. Consequently, that raw rage is hijacked and converted into a massive kinetic driving vector. Instead of transforming into an outward scream, it mutates into a hyper-performing industriousness. 2. Blind Industriousness: The Gala of Constant Performance This is the precise operational phase that standard psychology routinely omits: prior to crashing, the future depressed individual is frequently the most active, available, and highly productive person in the room. This is what we define as Blind Industriousness (Operosità Ottusa). It is a frantic, untiring, almost heroic "doing," yet it is completely blind. The subject does not execute actions or deliver help for authentic pleasure, but out of a silent retaliation and a desperate demand for structural redress. It is as if their system were communicating to the world: "Look at how much I do! Look at how indispensable I am! Now you are mechanically forced to recognize my value and apologize to me for the injustice I have endured." Case Study 1: The "Indestructible" Manager Let us observe the mechanics of Julia. Julia has felt structurally devalued since childhood. For years at her corporate firm, she is the first to arrive and the last to leave. She loads herself with everyone's unexecuted tasks, never declines a request, and neutralizes every emergency with a tight, strained smile. The entourage says: "Julia is a rock." In reality, Julia is saturated with toxic rage toward a father who never praised her and a mother who lived trapped in perpetual self-sacrifice. Her industriousness is blind because it does not serve her objective career advancement; it functions solely to feed the illusion that by becoming "perfect," that transgenerational void will be filled. Julia is burning liters of metabolic energy to fuel a performance engineered to purchase a baseline value that will never arrive via bureaucratic metrics. Periodically, her internal rage spikes violently because her system registers that everyone is exploiting her, yet she is incapable of setting a boundary. Following the rage spike, the quiet paralysis of disorientation ensues: What to do? How to change? 3. The Mechanics of the Collapse: The Cessation of Redress Why does this individual eventually wake up one morning completely incapable of lifting their body out of bed? Because the Limbic System—which operates as a ruthless biological accountant—abruptly closes the books. Depression materializes the exact moment when: 1. Metabolic Energy Depletes: The rage/hope binary that fueled the blind industriousness is entirely exhausted. The organism cannot hate or demand redress with the same intensity forever. 2. Environmental Feedback Fails: The subject registers that despite their massive output of "doing," the foundational injustice remains unaltered. The world has not apologized, the partner has not mutated, and the void is still present. 3. The Victim Process Synthesizes: The behavioral strategy of "being an excellent, industrious victim" proves to be an absolute technical failure. At that exact coordinate, the Limbic System cuts the power supply. Depression is the dead silence that follows the end of the theatrical performance. The individual who arrives at the absolute terminus of their compensatory projective representations finds themselves without ground beneath their feet and has no template for how to fall. In other words, their internal Emotional Model is formatted in such an iper-self-critical layout that it cannot compute alternative pathways. When an individual unconsciously constructs their entire existence upon competitiveness, they remain extremely flexible and adaptable, but strictly within a framework where everything is conceptualized as a performance. This state safeguards its equilibrium only as long as it operates within the pre-mapped track (sports, corporate ladders, profession, etc.). 4. Immunity to Evidence: When the Solution Threatens the System Within this projective dynamic, we encounter a paradox of supreme clinical relevance: the systematic incapacity to integrate success. If an individual has constructed their baseline Emotional Model upon the continuous negation of their own inadequacy, they will find themselves imprisoned within a closed circuit wherein any external demonstration of their true value will be automatically neutralized and ignored. 4.1 Truth as an Identity Threat If we provide this individual with absolute empirical proof that they are not inadequate—presenting factual data of their competence or success—we will not trigger a resolution. Instead, we will evoke an immediate reaction of devaluation and misconsideration of the proof itself. For their internal system, accepting that they are "already equal to the task" mandates the immediate dismantlement of their entire behavioral scaffolding. If they are not inadequate, then all their past exhaustion, their blind industriousness, and their frantic necessity to "prove they are the best" instantly lose all operational meaning. From numerous systemic viewpoints, discovering that one has miscalculated their entire life is completely unacceptable. 4.2 The Hollywood Paradox: When the Oscar Is Non-Resolutive We can observe this mechanic in a theatrical archetype: the Hollywood actor who dedicates their entire existence to the climb toward fame. In many scenarios, the driving engine of this ascent is not raw talent, but a starving Limbic System attempting to silence a chronic sensation of insignificance. The performer is fully convinced that once they reach the "red carpet," once world recognition is secured, that internal deficit will vanish forever. Yet, the unforeseen anomaly occurs: when they finally hold the Oscar in their hands and the entire world delivers factual proof of their value, their internal system experiences zero homeostatic peace. Conversely, it registers an acute threat. ・ The Devaluation of the Proof: If they accepted that award as definitive proof of their adequacy, they would be forced to admit that all the toxic rage, sacrifice, and suffering that fueled them for decades were based on an error of perception. They would have to admit they "got it all wrong." ・ The Flight Toward a New Performance: To avoid this structural identity collapse, the system reacts by misconsidering the success achieved. Initially, the actor will live in the "paradise" of a dream world, executing and realizing every collective stereotype as a proof of self-worth, but very soon the architecture crashes. The actor will begin to compute that the award was merely the byproduct of luck, political maneuvers, studio marketing, or that it is "not enough" compared to the next milestone. The system needs to return to feeling "not important enough" to re-ignite the high-arousal engine of performance. The truth of success is actively negated to safeguard the interpretive framework of the struggle: the subject does not pursue success to enjoy it, but to feed the very doubt that forces them to run. The internal system prefers to maintain the suffering of negation rather than accept a truth that would render its own interpretive structure useless. In other words: they require the doubt surrounding their inadequacy to fuel the engine of their performance. 5. The Schism Between Word and Behavior Within this scenario, a contradictory complexity develops, splitting the cognitive plane from the factual plane: ・ The Cognitive Plane (The Conscious Lie): In words, the individual accepts the demonstration of their competence. They express gratitude for the compliment, acknowledge the success, and appear to agree with the empirical evidence. This is a baseline maneuver for social adaptation: to explicitly negate blatant evidence would appear irrational. ・ The Limbic Plane (The Reality of Behavior): In actions, absolutely nothing alters. Once the spotlight of the discussion fades, they will immediately return to executing the exact same behaviors as before, operating as if that demonstration had never occurred. They will continue to hunt for validation, dread external judgment, and wage warfare against a phantom they just claimed they no longer see. 6. Non-Conscious Negation as an Operational Habit This occurs because positive environmental data is never "hooked" by the Limbic System into a state of coherence with verified real-world experiences. The dynamics of the Limbic System remain fiercely loyal to their own preset standards of self-image perception. The demonstration produced by the outside world is treated as an interference—an anomaly that is not particularly important, a data point inconsistent with the "habit" of the internal Model. The individual ends up negating the validity of the proof, not because they fail to comprehend it cognitively, but because they cannot integrate it internally. If they did, the internal "Director" would find itself completely without a script, and the resulting void would be registered as vastly more dangerous than the inadequacy itself. We must understand that this "void" is represented by the absolute lack of integrated limbic experiences of success, and the total absence of an internal self-image that differs from the negative one they carry. 7. Depression as a Defense Vector (Energy Conservation) When the system shuts down, it does not do so out of malice, but for pure biological survival. If you continue to run full speed down a track that leads absolutely nowhere, the only intelligent operation your brain can execute is to physically prevent you from walking. ・ The Heaviness: Feeling your legs turn to lead operates to mechanically block you from going to work to serve others' models yet again. ・ The Anhedonia (Disinterest): Experiencing zero pleasure for anything functions to prevent you from investing precious metabolic energy into desires that would inevitably be hijacked by the old performance loop. Case Study 2: The "Sacrificial" Mother Consider a mother who for twenty years has completely erased her own identity for her offspring, driven by the unresolved rage of having been neglected in her youth. She cooked, cleaned, and iper-controlled every variable with military efficiency (sacrificial industriousness). The moment the children leave the household and fail to return the monumental validation her system expected, she collapses. She no longer possesses an operational arena where she can demonstrate her value to herself. Her depression is not simple sadness: it is her biological system stating: "Serranda chiusa (Shutter down). The market of sacrifice has failed." Now you must begin from absolute scratch. This situation, combined with the cultural parameters of victimhood, ignites a deaf, internal, powerful disappointment and rage. Whichever individual carries a model where rage is the dominant frequency will refuse the required transformation and slide directly into depression. 8. The Trap of "Willpower" Commanding a depressed individual to "make an effort" or "just get out of the house" constitutes a catastrophic technical error. It means demanding that they return to the exact blind industriousness that killed their system in the first place. It means demanding that they put the mask back on and resume acting to soothe the anxieties of the entourage surrounding them. The depressed individual does not need to "rediscover the will to do"; they need to completely dismantle and re-identify the underlying reason why they were doing, which are two completely different mechanical operations. 9. How the System Is Re-Booted (The Mechanical Solution) Exiting depression is never an act of conscious willpower; it is an operation of navigation reprogramming. ・ Phase One: Cease Being "Good". The absolute first step is accepting to be completely "non-performing." The internal system must register that there is no longer anyone left to impress and no transgenerational debt left to pay. ・ Phase Two: The Raw Action (L'Agito Nudo). The subject must begin executing minuscule actions that possess absolutely zero external witnesses. If you wash a dish, execute it solely because the dish is dirty, not so that someone returns a "thank you" feedback. If you walk, execute it because your biological muscles require the kinetic movement, not to lose weight and capture the gaze of the environment. ・ Phase Three: Govern the Residual Rage. Instead of transforming rage into labor or sacrifice, it must be recognized as the clear biological signal of a violated boundary. In conclusion: depression is the ultimate evolutionary opportunity to cease operating as a slave to one's own Emotional Model. It is the exact moment when the mental machine seizes and finally allows you to step out of the vehicle and decide where you genuinely want to go, without ever having to prove anything to anyone ever again. Depression is not the end of life, but the absolute end of the theatrical performance. And only when the performance ends can authentic empirical existence begin.
