Emotional Functionalities: Primary Emotional Dynamics as the Engine of Action and Stability
(By Alberto Bonizzato – Behavioral Coach)
The Barrier-Type Projective Selection, the Homeostasis of Pain, and the Decoding of Systemic Cases
Within the POMM (Perspective of Observation of Mind Mechanics) framework, emotions are not interpreted as transient "moods," fluctuating temperaments, or poetic reactions to the events of existence. They are configured, in every respect, as biomechanical functionalities.
The very etymology of the word (from the Latin e-movere, "to move out") prescribes their intrinsic nature: emotions are energetic and directional activations designed to produce a movement, a kinetic action, or an immediate adaptive response. To comprehend the functionality of an emotional state means to cease investigating its abstract "meaning" and begin mathematically observing what it produces within the integrated individual-environment system.

1. Emotions as an Instrument of Survival and the Binary Engine
Every emotional state possesses a rigorous biological raison d'être that precedes the structuring of our neocortical and rational activity by millions of years. There are no "useless," "wrong," or "negative" emotions in an absolute sense: each of them responds to a functional necessity bound to a specific environmental condition registered by the Limbic System and the Amygdala.
The architecture of the Emotional Model rests upon two fundamental biological pillars: Primary Fear and Evolutionary Curiosity (attraction/exploration). Every complex sentiment—from anxiety to conflictual aggression, from guilt to represented joy—is merely a chromatic shade generated by the blending of these two primary colors.
An attack of rage or an anxious block are not computational errors of the mind, but functional responses (though frequently anachronistic) that the system deploys to protect the organism or drive it toward relational adaptation:
The Alarm Function (Primary Fear): Instantly recruits metabolic resources for defense or flight. Its functionality is the safeguarding of biological and psychic integrity. Furthermore, it regulates the pacing of learning: because the organism cannot instantaneously adapt to an anomaly, fear dictates the timing of experiential integration, acting as a functional speed modulator.
The Exploration Function (Evolutionary Curiosity): Generates a kinetic drive outward, aimed at acquiring new resources, environmental data, and mappings of reality.
The Cohesion Function (Affectivity): Guarantees the social bond and the protection of the primary nucleus, a fundamental element for the survival of the lineage.
These biochemical activations constitute the Arousal, which is the reactive intensity of the organism. If the emotional functionality is correct, the intensity of the response is rigorously proportional to the stimulus; if it is distorted by a deficient model, the system produces un-real projections that generate systemic suffering.
2. Homeostatic Functionality: The Coherence of the Model
One of the most counterintuitive aspects of mind mechanics resides in the fact that even painful or apparently disfunctional emotions fulfill a precise function: the conservation of internal homeostatic equilibrium.
The human mind does not seek "happiness" or "well-being" in an abstract sense (these are idealizations of the cognitive mind); it seeks exclusively Coherence with its own Emotional Model.
If an individual's primary model is structured upon the dynamics of exclusion or devaluation, experiencing pain over a rejection constitutes an "effective" and coherent functionality, because it validates the known reality. In this sense, the painful emotion acts as an identity stabilizer: the organism prefers to suffer according to known, codified modalities rather than confront the unknown, which would activate an alarm arousal of a much higher and unmanageable intensity.
3. Functional Emotions (Primary) vs. Represented Emotions (Sentiments)
It is necessary to enforce a sharp distinction between the original emotional functionality and its cognitive translation or superstructure:
Functional Emotions (Primary): Generated by the Limbic System and the Amygdala. They constitute the immediate, rapid, and subcortical activation aimed at a concrete action (the reflex reaction, the thrill of attraction, the visceral signal of danger). They terminate as soon as the driving action is completed.
Represented Emotions (Sentiments): These constitute the neocortical reprocessing and encoding of the limbic signal. This is the plane where drammatization intervenes, transforming the functional drive into an eminently moral and ideal narrative. Devoid of immediate practical utility, the represented emotion can perpetuate itself for years, fueled by projections, resentments, and memories, for the sole purpose of confirming the stability of the Emotional Model.
4. Projective Selection: The Invisible Filter of Reality
The human mind does not operate like a video camera that passively records every detail of the environment, but functions as a barrier-type selective system. When an individual executes a behavior, the surrounding environment generates an infinity of real variables and responses (the unknown value X). However, the subject is not biologically equipped to perceive them all: their Limbic System operates an instantaneous and automatic projective selection.
Among the countless shades of feedback available within phenomenal reality, the mind isolates, fishes out, and interprets a minimal portion—frequently a mere two or three vectors—selecting exclusively those attuned to its own Emotional Model and discarding dissenting data:
Active Filter: One does not observe reality for what it is, but sifts through it in a programmed hunt for what the model expects to find.
Exclusion of the Dissenting: All environmental variables that do not coincide with the internal projection are literally ignored, becoming invisible to consciousness.
System Conservation: If the internal model projects a threat or a devaluation, the mind will discard ten welcoming signals to focus obsessively on the single ambiguous detail capable of validating the limbic alarm.
The feedback received, therefore, is not an objective data point coming from the outside, but a fragment of reality selected specifically to nourish the stability of the system. This explains why change proves so difficult: the individual is trapped within a closed circuit where they project a vision of the world and then utilize reality itself, duly mutilated by their own selection, to prove to themselves that such a vision is the only one possible.
5. Case Studies and Mechanical Decoding of Dynamisms
Case 1: Gianna’s Relational Stuttering (Submission to Projective Judgment) Subject Profile: Gianna, 30 years old, operating in the medical field within a hospital. She presents a severe form of relational stuttering, localized exclusively during weekly meetings and briefings with colleagues, contexts in which she experiences a state of kinetic block and panic. Dominant traits: intransigence, volitività, determination, chronic shame.
Analysis of Recorded Behavior (Laboratory Exercises): During video-recorded sessions, Gianna's apprehension activated even in the presence of a completely empty room. The moment she imagined having to execute an expository performance before an audience, she immediately activated her own inhibitory blocks.
On a non-verbal level, a constant dynamic emerged: an automatic, stereotyped smile (even in the absence of interlocutors), bodily movements devoid of naturalness and spontaneity, and attempts at assertiveness alternating with glances searching for approval and smiles of self-confirmation. This sequence was immediately followed by the blockage of speech: the head protruding forward, oscillation of the skull, and a fixed gaze.
[IMAGINATION / PROJECTION OF JUDGMENT] │ ▼ [ACTIVATION OF AN INADEQUATE SELF-IMAGE] │ ▼ [COERCIVE COMPENSATORY ATTEMPT / SMILE] (Attempted Assertiveness / Non-Verbal Approval Seeking) │ ▼ [SYSTEM CRASH / AROUSAL AT THE LIMIT] (Kinetic Speech Block / Stuttering)
Decoding of the POMM Mechanics: Gianna's apprehension responds to entirely un-real parameters. The sequence is not dictated by "insecurity" (the subject actually displays great determination), but by an automatic behavioral triad. Gianna projects a baseline of devaluation and submission to judgment, activating the internal image of herself as inadequate.
The Limbic System attempts to compensate for this unpleasant sensation through seductive schemas (the submissive smile and approval-seeking); however, the alarm arousal spikes to a frequency so high that it saturates the motor channels, interrupting the faculty of speech (stuttering) and restoring a pseudo-equilibrium until the subsequent activation.
The Primary Family Matrix: Gianna's mother presents an iper-volitivo, bellicose, rancorous, and apprehensive temperament, structured due to a marital separation lived within a framework of acute victimhood. The firstborn (Gianna's older brother) structured himself as the "perfect son": efficient, obedient, and entirely molded upon maternal needs to secure relational survival. Gianna, the second-born, found herself structurally unable to compete on the plane of efficiency with her brother.
The mother activated constant comparative dynamics, manifesting intolerance and administering systematically negative attention to Gianna ("hurry up, I'm in a rush!"), emphasizing her presumed slowness and inadequacy. Gianna absorbed and internalized this selective filter: she understood that the only way to extract a critical mass of attention from her mother was to play the role of the problematic, inefficient daughter, converting depowerment into a precise seductive strategy to mitigate maternal rage.
Case 2: The Familial System of Luisa, Luca, and Franco (Victimhood, Psychosis, and Performance) The Parental Matrix: Luisa, a former teacher and librarian, affected by chronic major depression resistant to traditional therapies. The husband, a former high-level athlete, developed psychosis and major depression concurrently with the cessation of his competitive sports career.
The emotional structure of Luisa was determined by four factors: rigid Tyrolean schemas of origin, primary parental pressures, the absorption of the Italian cultural victimistic moralism (exacerbated by her status as a foreigner and exposure to the highly ideologized environment of the school system), and the iper-evaluative pressures of her sporting partner, who applied a communication based on judgment, criticism, and performance within the family. This structural quartet inevitably drove Luisa's system into clinical depression.
[LUISA'S EMOTIONAL MATRIX] (Tyrolean Schemas + Ideological Victimhood + Partner Pressures) │ ┌─────────────────────────┴─────────────────────────┐ ▼ ▼ [LUCA'S STRATEGY] [FRANCO'S STRATEGY] - Withdrawal from Rank - Seductive Iper-Performance - Somatic Block & Anhedonia - Excited Mask / Substance Abuse - Preventive Avoidance of Judgment - Psychotic Crash when Feedback Fails
The Relational Strategy of the Children: In such a family geometry, primary fears do not offer many action variables, forcing the children to structure polar strategies to manage chronic limbic alarm:
Luca (The Withdrawal from Rank): 24 years old, presents dyslexia, dyscalculia, mental rigidity, and a severe somatic-postural block (a frozen walk, facial expressionlessness, anhedonia). Luca managed the alarm through a total, preventive withdrawal from the market of approval, formatting himself on the certainty of never being equal to the task. Through the POMM protocol of real-action unlocking and the deactivation of projective judgment, Luca shed his bodily rigidity, successfully inserting himself into a highly relational working field and unlocking his social life. This re-balancing allowed the mother, Luisa, to question her own model, deactivating her depression through the launch of an independent small business.
Franco (Seductive Iper-Performance): 21 years old, speaks three languages fluently, a former model in the United States, diagnosed with manic psychotic episodes and a severe substance abuse history. Franco adopted the exact opposite strategy to Luca: the iper-activation and externalization of a constantly excited, performing, and loquacious mask, designed to compulsively capture the Variable X (the entourage's attention). Drug abuse operated as a relational code and an anesthetic for his alarm arousal. The dread of losing aesthetic feedback (premature hair loss) caused his projective scaffolding to crash, triggering an involuntary psychiatric hold (T.S.O.). Only through the reverse engineering decoding operated via POMM did Franco comprehend that his condition was not "madness," but the coercive sottomissione to a paternal performance model; this awareness allowed him to stabilize his asset outside of manic responses.
6. Parenthood: The Legacy of the Selective GazeWhile in early infancy the child operates as an anatomical recorder of the caregivers' social interactions, at this stage it is necessary to understand what is transmitted on a purely technical level: the child inherits the parent's selective filter.
The parent does not pass down an objective description of the world to the child; they dictate which specific projective variables to observe:
The Parental Radar: If a parent, upon entering a social environment, instantaneously and uniquely selects signals of potential criticism or judgment (neurovegetatively ignoring welcoming signals), the child learns that such a variable is the only real, relevant, and dangerous element of the phenomenal landscape.
The Formation of the Blind Spot: Mirroring this, everything the parent excludes from their own visual field (because it is inconsistent with their Emotional Model) converts into a blind spot for the child. A genuine transgenerational elective blindness is thus transmitted.
The Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Once they reach adulthood, that child will not consciously "choose" to be an anxious or conflictual subject. Simply, their Limbic System will continue to fish from the surrounding environment exclusively those threat stimuli it watched the parent select for years, continuously validating a mutilated, distorted reality that is, nonetheless, perfectly coherent with the matrix of origin.
To evolve does not mean to exert a rational control over emotions—an operation neuro-functionally impossible for the neocortex toward subcortical structures—but to map this geometry, deactivating the moral value of the projective filter to transition toward genuine emotional independence.
