The Phenomenology of Comparison: From the Inferiority Complex to the Functional Lacuna

(By Alberto Bonizzato – Behavioral Coach)

Within the Perspective of Observation of Mind Mechanics (POMM), what has historically been defined as an "inferiority complex" must be fundamentally re-evaluated as a specific configuration of the individual's projective matrix. We are not in the presence of an organic or psychological pathology, but rather a automated relational dynamism wherein the representation of the self and the representation of the other fuse into a system of constant value-measurement.

1. The Genesis of Comparison within the Emotional Model

Comparison is never an act of conscious volition or free choice; it operates as an active parameter of the internal Emotional Model, absorbed via primary somatic imprinting within the familial environment. Because a caregiver rarely possesses the self-mastery required to abstain from comparative behaviors, the child internalizes this modality as the sole operational protocol available to interpret their own spatial and social placement.

The immediate technical consequence is a chronic elevation of autonomic arousal, engineered to fuel an obsessive scanning of the signals emitted by the entourage. The cortex frantically hunts for environmental feedback that can either validate or invalidate its pre-set projective baseline of inadequacy.

This structural dynamism executes its scripts within the framework of a deep archive of absorbed valuations that acts as an automatic driving vector: the individual does not consciously choose to engage in interpersonal comparison; they are mechanically forced to do so by the architecture of their mental vehicle to extract a real-world proof for their internal projections.

2. The Compensatory Spiral and Feedback Failure

The moment the organism registers a systemic imbalance—whether configured as an axis of inferiority or an axis of superiority—the mental apparatus attempts to restore homeostatic equilibrium through behavioral compensation. However, compensation that is explicitly focused on external benchmarks (the raw comparison with others) produces the flawless structural paradox of aggressively feeding the "thirst" for external feedback, exponentially multiplying the comparative activity itself.

This runaway spiral triggers a severe dramatization of the core sensation of inadequacy, engineering a tightening vicious loop that manifests across distinct functional domains:

The Professional Environment: It translates into acute vectors of envy and toxic competition, severely undermining collaborative governance, corporate synergy, and team motivation.

The Familial Architecture: It orchestrates permanent conflictual dynamics between spouses and, critically, replicates the transgenerational matrix of blame-negation-devaluation directly onto the children.

The Governance of the Self: It blocks the processing and focalization of one’s objective real-world value, replacing it with a permanent, automated self-prejudice.

3. Beyond the Construct of Pathology: The Hologram of Distress

Traditional psychological taxonomies have historically cataloged these states as personality or emotional disorders. In stark contrast, the POMM framework demonstrates that the exasperation of these behaviors maintains a strictly functional, adaptive character.

To define the inferiority complex as an "illness" or "disease" means to completely mistake the superficial hologram of clinical symptoms for the structural origin of the computational problem.

The radical instability of perceived self-worth represents the localized focalization of a deficient Emotional Model (modello emozionale lacunoso). Viewed through this deterministic lens, categorical pathological labeling shifts the focus of the intervention toward highly dramatized external symptoms, completely ignoring the specific experiential lacuna that the automated mechanism is desperately trying to compensate for.

4. Competition as a Collective Stereotype and Negatory System

Contemporary society elevates raw competition to an absolute virtue, transforming it into a socially accepted, normative stereotype. Within this systemic distortion, the internal architecture that activates hyper-competition is identical to the architecture that triggers the inferiority complex; the only variable that changes is the quantitative volume of the signal transmitted, not the underlying biomechanics of the system.

Competition and interpersonal comparison are functional exercises of power executed entirely through the negatory system: the validity and social scale of a subject are made contingent upon proving that the interlocutor sits either safely above or strictly below them.

In every variation of this script, one of the two actors is structurally negated in their social worth. Consequently, this competitive relational matrix proves to be profoundly isolating; it operates as an absolute barrier to the authentic evolution of the individual, permanently frustrating the primary organismic need for a real-world, authentic connection that adheres to objective reality.
